Met Gala 2018: The Most Magnificent Looks, Breathtaking Couples and Least Inspiring Looks on the Red Carpet
It’s good to be back on the First Monday of May, aka the day of the annual Met Gala.
For those of you who don’t know, the Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. (Source: Wiki)
So don’t be shocked by the whacky and out-of-the-box looks on the red carpet, in fact, you should prepare to be surprised (and dazzled) by the looks. This is one of fashion’s BIGGEST nights of the year, and designers and celebrities alike display their most creative form of fashion to the world.
To all of you wondering why the celebrities choose to look a certain way, think of it as a night of creativity and expression in the arts and fashion, don’t look for the ordinary – these looks are only meant to be seen on the red carpet anyway.
Did you know that the Met Gala goes by a theme every year? This year it was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” so try seeing if you can interpret these outfits accordingly. MOST MAGNIFICENT LOOKS
Stella Maxwell is not a VS Angel for no reason! Apart from looking like the perfect combination of sexy and angelic, her Moschino gown quite literally follows this year’s theme. Her low-maintenance Rapunzel locks with her smoulder make for a killer beauty look as well. The jewel-encrusted strapless gown sure looks like it has a story of its own to tell.
Naomi keeps it relatively simple in her classy Michael Kors gown with a front cape and a short train that flows to one side. She looks like the human form of a French antiquity. Beautiful, Naomi!
The Mother of Dragons gives me Queen Victoria vibes in her gothic black Dolce & Gabbana gown with a sweeping cathedral train. Her pale face with overdone blush and red lips however give us a glimpse of beauty during the Elizabethan era. The portraits of cherubs distinguishes this gown. Don’t miss her earrings – I’d actually love to wear something similar one day.
Rooney Mara is the new face of Givenchy perfumes, and her regal dream of a dress is also a Givenchy creation. Her makeup is flawless, don’t you agree?
J Lo stuns as always in her Balmain gown with a thigh-high side slight AND a feathery train. What do you think of that big cross in the centre of her dress? It’s meant to bring to mind the colourful stained glass present in chapels. J Lo carries off every outfit she wears with the same oomph.
Rihanna in a Maison Margiela creation by John Galliano took all our breaths away. Fitted mini dress with a high-waist ankle-length skirt and a royal cape- all in beaded and embroidered silver was Riri’s chosen look for the night. From the Pope hat, rings right down to her anklet, Rihanna gives us a different and interesting look at the theme for the night. I think Riri just slays everything! However this look seems to have sparked some outrage from the Catholic community. What do you think; does fashion have to compromise on basis of religion?
Hailee was a vision in white, her look displays elegance and style and boy, is she stunning to look at! Her Prabal Gurung gown in white with Tasaki jewellery (complete with a tiara) makes her look like a princess! And the diamond choker and rings add to the appeal. Was she safe? Yes. But did she nail the look? Definitely, yes!
Not only is she one of my latest favourite singers, this girl is killing it with her fashion looks! What don’t I love about this lilac Versace gown; with a jewelled bodice, dramatic poufs and radial head piece? Don’t miss the golden tear drops under her eye to depict a weeping Mother Mary.
Cardi B sure does know how to steal the spotlight! This eye-catching Moschino gown with its bejewelled (so many pearls!), colourful arrangement and head piece covered in ornate jewels is captivating. Shout out to her date, designer Jeremy Scott.
Zendaya goes bold in this chain-metal Versace ensemble, and even went a step further with a short auburn wig. Never one to disappoint, she depicted Joan of Arc.
MOST MEMORABLE DRESSES
Blake Lively wearing a custom ruby and gold Versace gown with a fitted bodice and fishtail train is my favourite look from the gala. The embroidery work is so intricate and the bejewelled straps and neckline adds a true ‘heavenly’ touch. I love the semi-sheer with embroidery look at the lower part of the gown in between her cascading train. Her striking head piece is also a win. Do you love this look as much as I do?
Gigi’s ethereal stained-glass-inspired Versace gown was a smashing hit. Her gown’s translucent ‘winged’ look gives me Mariposa vibes with resemblance to a butterfly’s wings. How is she always such a marvel? Sparkly butterfly princess Gigi is one of my favourite Gigis.
Priyanka’s velvet burgundy Ralph Lauren dress completed with a gold-encrusted hood looks absolutely divine. The detailing from her neck down to her shoulders and neckline from her hood looks great too. I particularly like the innocence of this ensemble, compared to the rest of the night’s looks. Look at the way the way the gown’s sides-only train flows so elegantly!
Natasha Poly is a sight to behold in this stunning silver and midnight blue Balmain gown. This gown is fit for royalty, with its rich colours and fitting collar. The risqué neckline cut-out definitely stands out.
Cara attended the gala in an all-black Dior Couture cage-gown with sheer panels and a black crown with a beaded veil, probably in reference to chapel veils. Her lavender hair and golden face paint kept it more intriguing.
The singer would have surely drawn some ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the crowd in her bling Versace gold dress with thigh-high shiny gold boots. Oh, and of course just a regular pair of feathered angel wings on her back! The wings look majestic and span 6 feet. She arrived in a vintage convertible – with the top open. How did they transport the wings before that? That’s yet to be answered.
Rosie looks absolutely divine in this champagne-toned Ralph Lauren dress with a plunging V neckline. Ever so subtle yet gorgeous is the embroidery work all over. The long flowy shimmery cape makes it one of my favourite looks of the night. Don’t miss the Virgin Mary gold halo headpiece!
Kate’s ethereal Oscar de la Renta gown with a cathedral train is absolutely heavenly. She looks like a celestial being right?! I’m in awe.
MOST BREATHTAKING COUPLES
Here’s a look at some of the celebrity couples that attended the gala hand-in-hand, some complementing their partner perfectly, and some balancing out their partner’s grand outfit with a simpler selection. Either way, here are a few who made it work.
Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper
Irina’s gold gown with a crystal encrusted bodice and plunging neckline was a show-stealer. I loved her choker and ruffled skirt and train as part of the look. Bradley in Tom Ford was a silent stunner too.
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse
Picture perfect couple! Riverdale’s on-screen Betty and Jughead pair have found love in real life too. Lili looks as cute as ever in her H&M designed outfit. Yes, she refreshingly opted out of a high-end designer dress and it paid off because she still looks amazing. Cole looked strapping himself, and his suit was a welcome change from his Jughead attire.
Hailey Baldwin and Shawn Mendez
Hottest couple on the red carpet for sure! Hailey debuted pink hair and glided around in a baby blue Tommy Hilfiger gown and Shawn looked smart by her side in an aubergine Tommy Hilfiger suit too. Doesn’t she look like Cinderella meets Coachella? Although I would have loved a more dramatic but soft headpiece from her.
Alessandro Michele, Lana Del Rey, and Jared Leto
Okay, they’re not a couple but this holy trinity decked in Gucci caught all our eyeballs. Featuring Jared Leto as Jesus, Lana Del Rey as Mother Mary. Alessandro Michele, the Gucci designer accompanied them. I love the colours on their costumes, and just look at that work and craftsmanship! Dramatic, divine and a perfect depiction of the theme.
LEAST INSPIRING LOOKS
Okay now, I know this is a controversial celebrity to start off this list with, but aren’t you even the least disappointed that Kim K didn’t up the ante? Just being her usual sexy self isn’t enough every time is it? For me this look was quintessential Kim K on the red carpet, but can I say I’m SO glad to finally see her wear some colour? The Versace gown was beautiful yes, but not so inspired.
Kylie’s Alexander Wang gown might look good, but was it out of place among the sea of bejewelled, embroidered ensembles? I love her jewel-encrusted shades, but overall this look doesn’t do it for me.
Now this came as a surprise to me too- because I do like the dress, but not the way Selena carried it off together. Her tan complexion, obviously strikingly unnatural doesn’t make a good impression and neither does her “neither here, nor there” hairdo. The Coach dress leaves me unsatisfied. Sorry Sel!
Something didn’t go quite well together in Mindy’s Vassilis Zoulias outfit. Was it her ink-blue gloves perhaps, that didn’t suit her cream white gown? But I love her larger-than-normal crown, it’s beautiful to look at it and definitely saves her entire look from sinking.
We all know Deepika is a Bollywood queen, and she always graces events with her best foot forward. But was she just another pretty face that didn’t make the effort to rise to the theme? Her Prabal Gurung gown was as ravishing as ever, but I expected more from her. Was there a symbolism to the dress? I await an answer.
Although I can’t give Jenner credits for sticking to the theme, I’m in love with her sophisticated and high-fashion jumpsuit from Off White, with a few innovations like a sweep train and sheer glove-sleeves. Her minimal base with smoky eyes and a sleek ponytail complement her features and her stunning diamond earrings complete the look. BUT having said that, I’m so disappointed she didn’t go all out with such an innovative theme. Step up your game, Kendall!
Now not to forget the dashing men, here’s a quick look at the best dressed!
Sean Combs in Musika Frère
Nick Jonas in Dolce & Gabbana
Chris Combs in Dolce & Gabbana
Chadwick Boseman in custom Versace
Troye Sivan in Valentino
There are so many amazing outfits and I can’t write about all of them, so here are quick looks of some of the others I liked!
Ariana Grande in Vera Wang
Lily Collins in Givenchy
Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung
Rita Ora in Prada
Amal Clooney in Richard Quinn
So that’s a wrap on my Met Gala story. Who was your favourite celeb? And which designer was your pick for the night? If I had to pick I’d choose Blake Lively in Versace, and my favourite designer would be Versace again, having dressed Blake, SZA, Gigi, Kim K, Migos and Katy Perry.
